Maharashtra’s Final Year exams to be conducted online by October
On 31st August the Supreme Court gave the verdict on promoting final year students without conduction of exams. The court stated that final year students cannot be promoted without terminal semester examinations. The Court upheld the July 6 circular of the University Grants Commission (UGC) to hold university final year examinations by September 30. Due to an increase in the COVID-19 cases, Maharashtra’s Final Year exams would be conducted online.

In a virtual meeting held on Sunday, between the state minister for higher and technical education Uday Samant and the vice-chancellors (VC) of all 13 state universities, suggestions by a specially-formed committee were discussed and deliberated to find how exams could be held, keeping in mind the health and safety of all stakeholders.
Sources in the University of Mumbai said that most likely the panel would suggest holding Maharashtra Final Year exams in online mode. Universities may be asked to check the feasibility of the online exam from college principals.

The team or committee formed by the state government comprises of six-members headed by Dr. Suhas Pednekar, Vice-Chancellors from Mumbai, Pune, Aurangabad, Nagpur, Nanded, and SNDT universities along with two former Mumbai University Vice-Chancellors and directors of Higher and Technical education. The committee will decide on the conduct of final year exams in the state and would also give recommendations on how to conduct the exams in the state. The state government will also come up with uniform guidelines for the conduct of exams and also that the committee will ask the universities to check the feasibility of the online exam from college principals.

The court also mentioned that states were empowered to take decisions under the Disaster Management (DM) Act, 2005, to postpone final-year or final-semester exams beyond the September-end deadline. It allowed states to approach UGC for new dates that have to be communicated to them “at the earliest”.
Public universities in Maharashtra will conduct the final year examination in October 2020. The final year exams might be conducted online, with the question paper being multiple-choice questions (MCQ) based. Moreover, the state government might also take a decision on reducing the weightage of the 100-mark paper, as it changes the new exam duration to one hour.
