All about IPMAT Exam
After 12th standard exams most the students write IIT JEE for admission to IIT. Now as an alternative to JEE, the emerging trend is Integrated Program in Management course which is popularly known as IPM – of IIM Indore. IIM Indore gives you an opportunity to the students after 12th to pursue a graduation in Management followed by post-graduation in IIM Indore. IPMAT is followed by WAT and PI rounds for students who have been shortlisted. In this article we will be discussing in detail all about IPMAT exam and what IPMAT is.
Eligibility criteria for IPMAT:
- The candidate should have scored a minimum of 60% in class 10th/SSC and class 12th/ HSC or any equivalent examination in case of General and NC-OBC category. Also, the candidate should be of maximum 20 years of age as on July 31, 2018
- The candidate should have scored a minimum of 55% in class 10th/SSC and class 12th/ HSC or equivalent examination in case of SC, ST and PWD (DA) category
Test Duration and Pattern:
- IPMAT is a computer based test from 2016. Prior to this the test was conducted in paper-pencil mode. This is an objective exam where students has to select one correct answer out of the options given.
- Total number of questions in the test is 100 and total time duration for the test is 120 minutes.
- Each question carries 4 marks and total marks of the test is 400
- There is a negative marking in this test and each correct answer will fetch you 4 marks and 1 mark deduction for incorrect answer
- This IPMAT exam has three sections:
- Two sections on quantitative ability. One section will be objective type and other section on Short Answer Question type.
- Third section on verbal ability which is also objective type

IPMAT Exam structure:
Total number of multiple choice Quantitative ability questions is 40 and time limit for this section 40 minutes. Short answer quantitative ability section has 20 questions and time duration for this section is 40 minutes. The verbal ability section has 40 questions and time limit for this section is also 40 minutes.
Score to target
Predicting a target for the exam every year is not an easy task and the cut off varies every year. As per the analysis by our expert team at CATKing, scoring 170-180 marks in the exam is always a safe score for a general merit candidate to get shortlisted for further rounds
Selection process
Candidates who clear the cutoff set by IIM Indore will be shortlisted for further rounds. The next round after IPMAT will be Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI). For getting admission the overall performance of the candidates is considered
Tips for cracking IPMAT:
- In the verbal ability section, complete all the doable questions like idioms and phrases, vocabulary, fill in the blanks in 10-15 minutes
- In the quantitative ability section, don’t attempt any questions which are difficult or you are doubtful about their answers in the first attempt round
- IPMAT has negative marking so please do not make wild guesses and attract negative marks
- Try to maximize your attempts with accuracy and avoid very difficult questions
- For quantitative ability section, practice the NCERT Questions, previous year ipm model paper and mock tests.
- Solve and analyze mocks regularly
- Revisit and revise challenging questions from mock tests and ipm exam past question papers
- On the day before the exam, don’t take any mock test
Last Minute strategy for the exam
Once you have given all the mocks, go through and analyze the mocks once again. Know your strengths and weaknesses after analyzing, this will help you in selecting questions for attempting on your D day. If any particular topic is your weak area, do not unnecessarily waste time in solving that and if in case it turns out to be wrong then it will attract you negative marking. Make sure you focus on your strong areas and maximize your score
