My IIM Rohtak interview experience – 18 Feb 2022
2 panelists (Male and Female). They verified my documents first (10th, 12th, Grad, Aadhar, others if applicable).
Topic: Corruption. Male panelist specifically said, “Take a minute to think and then speak”. 10 seconds later, female panelist asked me to start. It felt like they did it on purpose to test me.
I’m GEM, did Electronics and Communication, even specified it while verifying Grad scorecard. A panelist forgot it at first and questions were on basic thermodynamics. I answered two (inter knowledge) and she realized later and switched to my core questions. 5 questions on core, 15+ GK questions, it felt like a rapid fire round.
1. Politics, politicians, current elections (nation wide)
2. World heritage sites, Olympics, noble prizes, capitals, Indian geography (2), etc.,
3. They asked me where I’m from. I don’t have a hometown, I’m from both AP and TS. Again, CMs and geography based question of both states. Twin cities – what are they? why are they called so. Hitec city – full form & why is it called so? and a few more questions
Panelists were chill, questions were not. There were no usual questions. Most of them were one Google search away though.

M: (Showed by sharing screen.)
P1: Tell us about your academic achievements, extracurricular activities.
M: Talked on it as I prepared.
P1: You mentioned being part of school council, explain a bit more on it.
M: I talked on the responsibilities I had and all other activities I participated and organized as a part of the same.
P1: Do you know where was Abdul Kalam born? (Based on my university name)
M: Tamil Nadu
P1: Exact place?
M: At the moment I couldn’t recall (Rameswaram)
All this while P2 only looked in screen for a moment and went on to read my application form while eating.
P2: You are from electrical background, right? Tell me the difference between Alternator and inverter?
M: (Surprised of his sudden question, stumbled a bit but answered as much as I Could) Alternator is AC generator and it produces electric power while inverter converts one form to another. Inverter can act as backup power supply. The Generator takes time to start during power outage. Inverter restores power supply immediately and thus act as back up supply.
P2: What does inverter do? Convert what?
M: DC to AC.
P2: How is UPS and inverter different?
M: UPS means uninterrupted power supply and provides no lag or delay nor fluctuations in case of power failure and can be connected directly to electronics like laptops. Inverters can be less efficient due to lag. (I didn’t know how to explain further at the moment.)
P1: Okay, U mentioned IEEE conference in your form? What is the full form of IEEE?
M: Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (I kind of mixed up with International and Institute)
P2: You mentioned reading crime thriller, tell us more on it.
P1: Yes, Crime thriller, adventures. Sounds interesting
M: Told about the ones I read and how I started out with movies and comics and now read in digital platforms.
P1: If you were to travel from your hometown to Rohtak, which all states will you cross?
M: Started off saying Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra..

M: By road, you can got right. (I just imagined the map of India and named the states by it. I was confused and anxious when they said but they said to continue)
