What is a good GMAT score
When it comes to GMAT scores, every aspirant is usually confused as to what is a good GMAT score.
If you want to get into a top MBA program, a good GMAT score is required. Each Business School is different and has different expectations for GMAT score. There is certainly not one score that will guarantee admission apart from a perfect 800 total score. There is also not one score that will deny you admission as well.
There are four sections in a GMAT exam: Quantitative, Verbal. Analytical Writing Assessment and Integrated Reasoning. The highest score for GMAT is 800. This score comes from the scores on two out of the four sections of the exam – the Quantitative section and the Verbal section. The scores from the 3rd and 4th sections, the Analytical Writing Assessment and the Integrated Reasoning section, are not included in the final score, but are still important parts of the exam.
When it comes to GMAT scores, the main takeaway is this: ultimately, the most important thing to remember is that a good GMAT score is the one that gets you into the business school of the student’s choice.
The mean total GMAT score is 556.04, but that doesn’t mean a student just has to get above a 550 to get into the school of their dreams. At many schools, even a 600 would be a very low GMAT score. At top MBA programs like Stanford, Harvard, Yale, UC Berkeley, and Dartmouth, the average GMAT score of incoming students is above 720.

Another way of looking into what is a good GMAT score, could be that most of the top Business schools have their mean GMAT scores above 650 marks. So, the lowest score that can at least give a student a realistic chance of getting into the top business school is 650. Two thirds of the test takers score between 400 and 600. And above 600 is scored by merely one third of test takers. As a student your cut of point should be above 650.
Another way to determine the right score that a student should target would be by analysing the GMAT scores of the top Business Schools and determine GMAT score of the middle 80% of the class. That should be the score that a student should achieve.
